Co-Labs by journey is a 14,700 sq ft early-stage life science incubator on the NIAB site off Huntingdon Road in Cambridge, created by flexible workspace platform Journey in partnership with lab operator Co-Laboratories. It spans three buildings (Defra, Old Granary and Bingham) and scales from a single hot bench to private labs of 2–30 benches with attached write-up space, backed by shared tissue culture and equipment rooms. Pioneer Group is converting most of Cambridge's 1980s Grafton Centre shopping mall into a lab-led mixed-use science campus branded "Origin Cambridge", with roughly 47,300 sqm (~509,000 sq ft) of laboratory and office space within a ~675,000 sq ft scheme. Crucially for founders, this is not yet an operating facility: planning consent was granted in February 2024, Abbeygate House was demolished in August 2025, construction is anticipated to start in early 2027 and space is expected to be available from 2028. Its selling point is a genuinely urban, city-centre lab location — retained retail, restaurants, leisure and a Premier Inn hotel on site — rather than the out-of-town Cambridge science parks.
